Porn Cakes: Pancakes to Lift For

This is a guest post from Krissy Cagney, Gnarly Athlete and author of the Porn Cake pancake recipe book.

The idea for writing Porn Cake was born trying to set up Sunday pancake breakfasts at the house. That slowly evolved into conversations about how “pancake” is it’s own category of food because “What is a pancake?” has such a diverse and versatile definition that allows for near endless iterations of exploration and creativity. Eventually we settled on the idea of “Porn Cake”, a recipe book that would be beautiful, fun, but most importantly, offer recipes that are high in protein to help fulfill the nutritional requirements of the athletes and fitness enthusiasts who turn to us for information and inspiration.

All the Porn Cakes in the book were created with the best ingredients (most notably Gnarly protein powder) and designed to not only fuel us, but recover us from our active lifestyles as athletes. As any chef would say, the quality of a recipe will only be as good as the quality of the ingredients at the start. The best cooking techniques in the world can’t improve a poor product or a bad ingredient. The end result can still be good, but it will never be as good as it could have been.

We tried several proteins when we were developing our “Basic Recipes”- recipes that have more protein than carbs- for the book. Gnarly protein consistently gave us the best end result, just as we suspected. The flavor of Gnarly protein is balanced: No cloying sweetness, no chemical taste, and a creaminess that other proteins couldn’t match. The result was so good that when we tested the recipes, people couldn’t believe that they were eating “protein pancakes” because they aren’t the sad, dry, powdery, blandness that people normally associate with protein pancakes. They are just as great, if not better, than the real deal.

Quality is more than a characteristic, it’s an ethic we strive towards in everything we do. Quality is something that matters at every level- from not stopping when everyone else says “good enough”, to staying at work late to finish a project the right way, to the last rep on your last heavy squat set. It’s no surprise that Gnarly shares this ethic. It’s evident in every product they make. We couldn’t have done it without them.
