When determining the optimal protein intake for active individuals, the following factors should be considered: mode and intensity of exercise, protein quality, energy intake, carbohydrate intake, and timing of protein intake.

Generally, for endurance exercise, recommended protein intakes range from 1.0g/kg body weight to 1.6g/kg body weight per day, while for strength/power exercise, protein requirements range from 1.6 to 2.0g/kg body weight/day. So while both endurance and strength training increases the need for protein,  increased protein in endurance exercise is needed, predominantly, for an increase in mitochondrial density and related proteins as well as increased leucine oxidation (elevating the overall protein requirement), while increased protein for strength athletes is required for the synthesis of new muscle and/or to repair muscle damage.

For the most part, we use natural non-caloric sweeteners in Gnarly Nutrition products. These include Stevia and Monk Fruit.

We also use small amounts of evaporated cane sugar in our Gnarly Vegan Meal Replacement (to increase the calorie content) as well as our Gnarly Hydrate (to facilitate electrolyte transport).

Gnarly Nutrition includes a digestive enzyme blend and probiotics in our protein products to improve digestion, maximize protein assimilation, and improve general gut health.  We’ve had folks that can’t usually digest “whey” tell us they have no digestive problems when using our whey-based products; we attribute this to the high quality of our ingredients and the inclusion of digestive enzymes and probiotics.

Gnarly Nutrition uses whey sourced from domestic grass fed cows not treated with synthetic hormones—happy cows, eating what they should eat, and producing clean and natural milk.

Generally, we like to leave the quantity and source of carbohydrates in the hands of our consumers. However, Gnarly Vegan is a meal replacement and is thus higher in calories and carbohydrates than most other Gnarly products. Including a small amount of evaporated cane sugar in Gnarly Vegan allows us to increase calories and carbohydrates while making the product downright delicious.
