As a mom, I think about sleep constantly. I think about my toddler's sleep, my own sleep, and whether either of us is going to get enough of it tonight. But sleep isn't just something I care about as a parent. As a rock climber, trail runner, and weight lifter, I've learned that sleep is one of the most important factors influencing how I perform, recover, and feel day to day.
We spend countless hours thinking about training plans, nutrition, hydration, and recovery strategies. We invest in gear, tracking devices, and supplements. Yet one of the most powerful performance-enhancing tools available to us is completely free: sleep.
If nutrition provides the fuel and training provides the stimulus, sleep is where adaptation happens. It's when muscles repair, hormones regulate, memories consolidate, and the body recovers from the stress of training. Whether your goal is to climb harder, run farther, lift heavier, or simply feel better during your workouts, sleep is one of the biggest determinants of success.
Unfortunately, most of us aren't getting enough of it.
Sleep is Where Recovery Happens
Every training session creates stress that the body must adapt to. Muscles are damaged and rebuilt, glycogen stores are replenished, hormones are regulated, and the nervous system recovers. Much of this process takes place during sleep.
When sleep is inadequate, recovery suffers. Muscle repair slows, fatigue accumulates, motivation drops, and training quality often declines. You can have the perfect training program, but if you're not sleeping enough, you're limiting the return on all of your hard work.
The impact extends beyond recovery. Research consistently shows that sleep deprivation negatively affects both physical and cognitive performance. Even modest sleep restriction can reduce power output, slow reaction times, impair coordination, and decrease endurance capacity. What's particularly interesting is that workouts often feel harder when we're sleep deprived, even as objective performance measures show we're doing worse. In other words, poor sleep can make training sessions more difficult while producing fewer adaptations.
Sleep Supports Strength, Body Composition, and Performance
For athletes focused on strength, muscle gain, or body recomposition, sleep becomes even more important. Deep sleep is when much of our growth hormone secretion occurs, supporting tissue repair, recovery, and adaptation to training. Chronic sleep restriction has also been linked to elevated cortisol levels, reduced anabolic signaling, impaired protein synthesis, and diminished recovery capacity.
If you're trying to build muscle, six hours of sleep a night is unlikely to support your goals as effectively as adequate rest.
Sleep also plays a surprisingly important role in body composition. While many athletes focus heavily on nutrition, insufficient sleep can alter the hormones that regulate hunger and satiety. When we're sleep deprived, the hormone that signals fullness tends to decrease while the hormone that stimulates hunger increases. The result is often stronger cravings, increased appetite, and a greater desire for calorie-dense foods.
Anyone who's ever raided the pantry after a poor night's sleep knows exactly what that feels like.
Sleep Helps Protect Against Injury
Another compelling reason to prioritize sleep is injury prevention. Athletes who consistently get less sleep appear to face a greater risk of injury than their well-rested peers.
This likely stems from a combination of slower reaction times, impaired coordination, reduced tissue recovery, increased fatigue, and decreased focus. As fatigue accumulates, movement quality often declines, increasing the likelihood of both acute injuries and overuse issues.
Sleep Trains the Brain, Too
Athletic performance isn't just physical. Sleep plays a critical role in learning, memory consolidation, motor skill development, decision-making, and concentration.
Whether you're mastering a new lifting technique, refining climbing movement, practicing a golf swing, or learning game strategy, sleep helps solidify those adaptations. Many researchers now view sleep as an essential component of skill acquisition and athletic development.
Why Athletes Often Struggle With Sleep
Ironically, athletes often face unique challenges when it comes to sleep. Early morning training sessions, late-night competitions, travel, high training volumes, stress, caffeine intake, and screen exposure can all make quality sleep harder to achieve.
Some athletes even wear sleep deprivation as a badge of honor, treating sleep as something that can be sacrificed in pursuit of success.
Science suggests the opposite. Elite performance isn't built by sleeping less—it's built by recovering better.
Prioritizing Better Sleep
Just like in your training, it’s all about consistency. Maintaining a regular sleep schedule, prioritizing seven to nine hours of sleep, keeping the bedroom dark and cool, limiting caffeine later in the day, and establishing a calming pre-sleep routine can all improve sleep quality. Proper nutrition matters as well. Undereating or aggressively dieting can negatively affect sleep, while adequate carbohydrate and protein intake may support both recovery and rest.
Sleep Like the Athlete You Are
It's easy to think of sleep as passive time, especially when we're busy trying to fit in training, work, and everything else life demands. In reality, sleep is one of the most active periods of recovery and adaptation your body experiences.
Sleep supports muscle recovery, hormonal health, body composition, cognitive function, skill development, and athletic performance. It may reduce injury risk and improve the quality of every training session that follows.
As a mom, I know there are seasons of life when sleep isn't always within our control. Young children, work schedules, travel, and life's many demands can make ideal sleep feel impossible. But whenever possible, sleep should be viewed as a core component of training—not something that happens after training is done.
Because the adaptations you're working so hard to create in the gym, on the trail, on the wall, or in the mountains don't happen during the workout.
They happen while you sleep.
