Iron is the quiet operator behind every hard effort — and one of the most commonly deficient nutrients in active people, especially endurance athletes and women. Gnarly Baseline Iron+ pairs bioavailable iron with three essential cofactors — Vitamin C to drive absorption, B12 and Folate to fuel red blood cell production — delivering a complete iron-support formula in a single capsule. The result: efficient oxygen delivery and sustained energy your training demands. Clean-label, vegan-friendly, NSF Content Certified.
- Bioavailable iron + Vitamin C for enhanced absorption — ascorbic acid significantly increases non-heme iron uptake, so more of what you take actually gets used
- B12 and Folate for complete red blood cell support — iron builds hemoglobin, but B12 and Folate are required for healthy red blood cell formation and DNA synthesis; without all three, your oxygen delivery system has gaps
- Critical for endurance athletes, women, and anyone training at high volume or high altitude — the populations most likely to be deficient in one or more of these nutrients
- Vegetarian-friendly, clean-label capsule — no unnecessary fillers, independently tested
Function
Function
Iron is the mineral at the center of hemoglobin — the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs to your working muscles. Without adequate iron, your body can't produce enough healthy red blood cells, and your oxygen delivery system starts to fail. The result is textbook iron deficiency: fatigue that doesn't resolve with rest, reduced aerobic capacity, elevated heart rate at submaximal efforts, and the slow, frustrating sense that your body just won't perform the way it should.
But iron doesn't work alone. Red blood cell production is a multi-nutrient process:
- Vitamin C (99 mg) acts as a direct absorption enhancer — it converts non-heme iron into a form your gut can actually take up, significantly increasing bioavailability. Instead of relying on food pairing or timing, the Vitamin C is built into the capsule so absorption is optimized every dose.
- Vitamin B12 (1 mg) is essential for red blood cell maturation. Without adequate B12, the body produces abnormally large, dysfunctional red blood cells that can't carry oxygen efficiently — a condition called megaloblastic anemia that mimics iron deficiency in its symptoms.
- Folate (54 mg) works alongside B12 in DNA synthesis and cell division — the processes that drive red blood cell production in bone marrow. Folate deficiency independently impairs the body's ability to replace the red blood cells that hard training constantly breaks down.
The demand for all four nutrients compounds in populations that train hard. Endurance athletes — particularly runners — lose iron through footstrike hemolysis, where repeated impact physically destroys red blood cells. Sweat losses, gastrointestinal micro-bleeding, and increased red blood cell turnover from heavy training compound the demand. Women have additional losses through menstruation that significantly elevate daily requirements. Athletes training at altitude face yet another factor: the body ramps up red blood cell production to compensate for lower oxygen availability — requiring more iron, B12, and Folate as raw materials.
Gnarly Baseline Iron+ uses a well-tolerated, bioavailable iron form (bisglycinate) paired with its three essential cofactors — building and maintaining the iron stores and red blood cell capacity your body needs to sustain performance, recovery, and energy across weeks, months, and seasons of hard training.
How to Use
How to Use
Take 1 capsule daily, preferably with a meal. Vitamin C is already included in the formula to enhance iron absorption — no need to pair with an outside source.
Avoid taking within 2 hours of calcium-rich foods, dairy, coffee, or tea, as these compounds can inhibit iron absorption.
Do not supplement with iron unless you have confirmed deficiency or insufficiency through blood testing. Excess iron is not excreted efficiently and can accumulate to harmful levels. Consult a healthcare provider before beginning iron supplementation.
Stack: Part of the Gnarly Baseline daily wellness system. Pairs with Gnarly Performance Greens and Gnarly Vitamin D3 for a complete daily micronutrient foundation.

Iron supplementation works gradually and cumulatively. Serum ferritin levels — the most reliable marker of iron stores — begin to recover within 2–4 weeks of consistent supplementation in deficient individuals, but full restoration of iron stores typically takes 8–12 weeks of consistent daily use. The inclusion of Vitamin C, B12, and Folate supports this timeline by removing common bottlenecks — poor absorption and impaired red blood cell formation — that can stall recovery even when iron intake is adequate.
Performance improvements for athletes recovering from iron deficiency (reduced VO2 max, elevated resting heart rate, chronic fatigue) are typically noticeable within 4–8 weeks as hemoglobin levels normalize and oxygen delivery improves.
Results vary based on starting deficiency severity, dietary intake, training load, and individual absorption. Periodic blood testing (CBC with ferritin and serum iron, every 3–6 months) is the most reliable way to confirm status and adjust dosing. Supplementing beyond what your body needs provides no performance benefit and carries health risks — supplement based on data, not assumption.
May include improved aerobic capacity and VO2 max in deficient athletes, reduced fatigue and improved energy during training, better performance maintenance across high-volume training blocks, and improved recovery between sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is it best to take Iron Supplements?
Because of interactions with other nutrients that decrease iron absorption, like calcium or phytates (found in certain plants), Gnarly Baseline Iron+ works best when taken without food.
That being said, supplemental iron can often cause stomach upset, so taking it with a small snack (like a banana) may be beneficial.
My doctor told me I have iron deficiency, is Gnarly Baseline Iron something I should take to help with that?
While adding Gnarly Baseline Iron into your daily routine can help prevent a deficiency, the dosage of iron is not high enough to help you recover from clinical iron deficiency. Please consult your licensed health care practitioner about prescriptions or over the counter products that might be right for you.
I take a multivitamin that has Iron in it, why should I consider Gnarly Baseline Iron?
While multivitamins can be a convenient all in one solution, many of the minerals in a multivitamin (like calcium) interfere with iron absorption. If you are at risk for iron deficiency (endurance athletes, menstruating female, vegan/vegetarian) then taking a stand alone iron supplement like Gnarly Baseline Iron is a much more effective way to increase your daily iron intake.
Why did you include Vitamin B12 and folate in Gnarly Baseline Iron?
To support the role of iron in healthy red blood cell production, Gnarly Iron+ contains methylcobalamin, the active form of vitamin B12 as well as L-5 Methyltetrahydrofolate (L-5 MTHF), the predominant and naturally occurring form of folate in food. Additionally vegans and vegetarians, a group that should consider iron supplementation, are often also low in Vitamin B12.

- ASAndrea S.Verified BuyerI recommend this productRated 5 out of 5 stars1 week agoGreat!
Was diagnosed with anemia and was recommended taking an iron supplement. I chose this one over ferrous sulfate and it has been great so far. Gentle on my stomach, I haven't had any side effects at all and I feel more awake than a couple weeks ago.

As a vegetarian endurance athlete, I had been wondering if was getting enough iron in my diet, enough to meet the extra demands of endurance training. After 5-6 days after starting to take Gnarly Baseline Iron, I felt less fatigue and my legs recovered better from workouts. I really am impressed with the addition of Vitamin C to this formula to help improve absorption of the non-heme iron. No stomach issues whatsoever.

I have had difficulty for many years with iron supplements. I’m a distance runner and anemic. I was very hopeful this would work for me. I really like the many Gnarly products that I use. Also the educational messages are really good.
