Embracing the Outdoors: A Conversation with Kunlong Von Cousin

In the latest episode of the Gnar Stool Podcast, we had the pleasure of speaking with Kunlong Von Cousin, an ultrarunner, dad, and activist who is passionate about the outdoors and the importance of representation in sports. Kunlong's journey into the world of climbing and ultra running is not just about personal achievement; it's also about creating a more inclusive community for everyone.

From Climbing to Ultra Running

Kunlong's love for the outdoors began with climbing. Growing up in Baltimore, Maryland, he was inspired by a segment on "Wild World of Sports" featuring climbers tackling the Prodigal Son wall in Zion National Park. This moment ignited a passion that led him to pursue climbing seriously, eventually moving to Boulder, Colorado, where he worked at the Boulder Rock Club and met his climbing hero, Steve Matusan.

However, as Kunlong became a father, he faced the challenge of balancing his passion for climbing with his responsibilities as a parent. He made the difficult decision to step back from climbing and transitioned into ultra running, a sport that allowed him to honor the memory of friends he lost in climbing accidents. His first marathon was a tribute to them, and from there, he quickly found himself hooked on the thrill of ultra running.

The Importance of Representation

Throughout the conversation, Kunlong emphasized the significance of representation in both climbing and ultra running. He shared his experiences of being one of the few people of color in these sports and the challenges that come with it. Kunlong recounted a moment when a fellow climber remarked, "I never saw a Black guy climb like that before," highlighting the unfortunate tendency to equate race with ability.

Kunlong believes that visibility is crucial for fostering a more inclusive environment in outdoor sports. He pointed out that while there have been strides made in recent years, particularly following the events of 2020, there is still a long way to go. He advocates for initiatives that not only open doors for underrepresented groups but also provide the necessary support and resources to help them thrive in these sports.

Building Community and Safety

One of the key topics discussed was the importance of community and safety in outdoor spaces. Kunlong shared his own experiences of feeling unsafe while running on trails, a concern that many BIPOC individuals face. He stressed the need for outdoor spaces to be welcoming and safe for everyone, regardless of their background.

Kunlong also highlighted the role of organizations like Black Packers, which aim to create a supportive community for people of color in outdoor sports. These initiatives are essential for breaking down barriers and encouraging participation in activities like ultra running, which can often feel inaccessible to those from underrepresented communities.

The Mental Health Benefits of the Outdoors

Finally, Kunlong spoke passionately about the mental health benefits of spending time outdoors. For him, being in nature is not just a hobby; it's a necessity for his well-being. He believes that outdoor activities can provide a sense of purpose and clarity, helping individuals navigate the challenges of life.

As Kunlong continues to advocate for diversity and inclusion in the outdoor community, his story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of representation and the need for safe, welcoming spaces for all. His journey is not just about personal achievement; it's about paving the way for future generations to embrace the outdoors and find their own paths in sports.
